Mast Climbers Cases

Scanclimber® by Tractel® Mast Climbing Work Platforms are suitable for any kind of facade work, installations, bricklaying and the handling of passengers and materials.

The Clarion Hotel Helsinki is a 16-storey building including two towers, the highest being at the height of 78 meters. Scanclimber contributed to this construction project with two SC5000 and one SC6000 mast climbing platforms and a SC1432 construction hoist. Mainly the mast climbing platforms were used for façade work of the hotel. Construction hoist SC1432 was deployed for quick and efficient transportation of material and labor inside the building.

The Clarion hotel is part of the new West Harbour urban development project in the vicinity of Helsinki city center. The hotel is ideally located as the city centre is within walking distance. The hotel is part of the Nordic Choice hotel chain, comprising 164 hotels in the Nordic and other Baltic countries. The hotel is designed by Davidsson Tarkela Architects. The 1930's listed warehouse buildings, designed by Lars Sonck, are also integrated as a part of the new Clarion Hotel Helsinki.

The Clarion hotel complex consists of two towers. The highest tower reaches up 78 meters while the second tower is 68.5 meters high. A transparent glass footbridge connects both towers. Light composite aluminium plates were used for the façade. The hotel have 425 luxury rooms and a convention center able to accommodate 1000 people. Additionally, there is a roof bar on the top of the building which is open to the public.

A Norwegian construction company, Hent AS, was the main project contractor and the Finnish rental company Cramo, delivered Scanclimber mast climbing work platforms and hoists for the project.

Challenges

The location of the Clarion Hotel presented its own challenges during the construction phase. The work site stands adjacent the main road of Jätkäsaari, with high traffic flows of ferry passengers and lorries leaving the Länsisatama harbour. The area is close to Helsinki city center and remains a constantly busy location.

Because of the space constraints, a vertical transport medium was needed which could be installed and operated efficiently within the limited space available.

Scanclimber SC5000 and SC6000 mast climbing platforms were chosen for the facade work. They were capable in single mast versions of covering the whole length of the façade on each side of the structure.

Also, the erection of the machines for the façade work was a demanding exercise due to the very limited space at ground level.

The location of the work site is a busy public area between the main road and the seafront. In fact, one of the mast climbing platforms on the front face of the building was erected just over the local bus stop. Naturally, safety was the major concern, not only for the workers but for pedestrians passing by out in the street. This public and work safety was achieved in two ways:

  • Manufacturing the machines to high standards of safety ensuring a zero accident ratio at any kind of work site, whether a residential building or a highly complicated structure.
  • Extra strong Maxi anchoring to the building ensured the stability of the working platforms at heights, thus ensuring a high work safety factor.
  • A strong, taut sheet was laid over the area outside the part of the work site exposed to the public. This ensured public safety, eliminating any possibility of danger to people in case of tools or material falling from the platform during the façade installation phase.

Window Installation and Material Transportation

Cramo delivered the Clarion Hotel project with 3 Scanclimber mast climbing platforms, 2 of them SC5000's, one SC6000 and one construction hoist SC1432. Mast climbing platforms were used for façade and window installation work at the hotel. The tower crane lifted the façade elements from ground level to the attachment position, where they were mounted by workers operating from SC5000 and SC6000 mast climbing platforms. A hoist was required at the site to accelerate work on the building interiors, in parallel to the façade work. A Scanclimber SC1432 construction hoist was used for the efficient transportation of material and labor inside the building.
